Tax Talk Episode 4: Taxpayers’ Rights

The protection of taxpayers’ rights is central to the purpose of the Institute – the need to ensure an appropriate balance between their rights and obligations has long been a focus of our deliberations. Two years ago, the Institute set up a Working Group to examine how this might best be achieved.

Given our work on this issue, we warmly welcomed the recently launched European Commission initiative on Taxpayers’ Rights, and the simplification of tax rules and procedures for taxpayers across the Union. With the public consultation on this initiative underway, we devoted our latest episode of our podcast series, Tax Talk to a broad discussion of their rights.

Samantha McCaughren, our host and Sunday Independent Business Editor, was joined by European Commission policy officer, Albert Raedler who is leading the Commission’s initiative; Institute Council member Kieran Twomey who chairs our Working Group on Taxpayers’ Rights; and Nina Olson, former US National Taxpayer Advocate until her retirement in 2019 and current director of the Center for Taxpayer Rights.

Over a 32-minute discussion, the panellists gave their perspectives on a matter that is of growing concern globally. Listen to the discussion below or on popular podcast apps, including Spotify and Soundcloud.
