On Friday 19 April, Institute President, Tom Reynolds, extended a warm welcome to over 370 CTAs attending the Institute’s Annual Conference in Galway. There was a fantastic atmosphere in The Galmont Hotel over the two days with delegates connecting and reconnecting while absorbing first-class technical presentations. In his opening comments, the President spoke about the dynamic nature of tax, and noted how the pace and complexity of change in tax laws over the last decade is putting significant pressure on the tax profession.
The focus of the conference was the current tax challenges and their application to real-life client scenarios, with the aim to bring attendees up to speed with the latest raft of changes in tax law and administration.
Friday morning covered exiting a business, succession for family businesses, employment taxes, and corporate tax compliance. The presentations in the afternoon looked at corporate law, succession structures, property tax, VAT on property, and finished with an Introduction to Generative AI by our guest speaker, Jonathan Eustace, Microsoft.
On Saturday morning, a number of delegates started the day with this year’s wellness session – Wim Hof Method Breathwork with Mary Fahey – before hearing about Tax Appeals Commission (TAC) determinations, tax interventions and disputes, and a pensions update completing the conference.
